No. This tool is a novelty for entertainment only. The output is a deterministic hash of the two names you enter (a small integer folded to a 60-100% range) and carries no predictive power about a real relationship. Actual compatibility and relationship-outcome research — notably Gottman JM and Levenson RW's longitudinal 'Four Horsemen' studies (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1992), the PAIR Project (Huston TL, University of Texas), Berscheid E and Walster EH's classic 'Interpersonal Attraction' (Addison-Wesley, 1969), and Fisher HE's neurochemical framework in 'Why We Love' (2005) — evaluates observable behaviors (contempt, criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling) and reciprocity patterns over weeks to years, not the letters of two first names. Do not use this result to inform any relationship decision.

How does the Love Calculator determine a percentage?

The calculator concatenates the two lowercased names, runs each character through a 32-bit rolling-hash accumulator (h = ((h<<5) - h) + charCode; h |= 0), takes the absolute value modulo 41, and adds 60 — producing an integer between 60 and 100 inclusive. This means: (a) the same pair of names always returns the same score; (b) swapping the input order returns the same score because concatenation order does not matter for the specific arithmetic used here — order-sensitivity would require a keyed or non-commutative hash; (c) the score is uncorrelated with any real attribute of the people named; (d) the 60% floor is a deliberate design choice for a lighthearted tool, not a statistical property. This is essentially the same 'name-hash percentage' idea that has circulated on novelty sites since the late 1990s.

Are the names I enter saved, shared, or used to train anything?

Accepted Answer

No. The entire calculation runs client-side in your browser via a small JavaScript function — no network request is made when you press the button, no name is transmitted to CalcLeap or to any third party, and nothing is written to browser storage. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's DevTools Network tab and watching (nothing appears) while you press Calculate. This client-side-only behavior is the same privacy pattern CalcLeap uses for every calculator on the site — see the calculator methodology note in /how-we-calculate.html and the Privacy Policy at /privacy.html.

Why can't I get a score below 60%?

Accepted Answer

The score range is hard-coded to 60-100% because a novelty tool that returns 'you are 3% compatible' would (a) be actively hurtful to users who might take a low number seriously despite the disclaimer and (b) create no genuine entertainment value. The floor is a product design choice, not a statistical property of the underlying hash. If you want a wider spread you can trivially rewrite the last line of the client-side function — but that would not change the fact that the number carries no predictive information.

The peer-reviewed literature converges on several observations more useful than any single number: (1) shared values and life goals predict long-run satisfaction better than shared hobbies or personality-inventory 'match scores' (Gottman JM, 'The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work,' 1999). (2) The ratio of positive to negative interactions during conflict is a strong marker — stable couples average roughly 5:1 (Gottman & Levenson, 1992). (3) Attachment style compatibility (Hazan C and Shaver PR, JPSP 1987) predicts caregiving and communication patterns. (4) Financial-values alignment predicts one of the top three divorce-cited stressors per the American Psychological Association's Stress in America surveys.
